But Cupertino won’t be stopping their AI development just with a cheesy voice assistant.<br /><br /><br />According to a report by Bloomberg, claiming an unnamed source, Apple is reportedly designing a dedicated AI chip for Apple devices, possibly iPhone and iPad, internally known as Apple Neural Engine.<br /><br /><br />The prime task of Apple Neural Engine would include freeing the CPU and GPU from handling complex tasks such as facial recognition, speech recognition, the ones based on augmented reality, etc.<br /><br />The report suggests that the new AI chip would improve the device’s overall battery life by reducing the workload of the CPU. Also, Apple is testing these chips on iPhone prototypes which are under development. However, it would be highly unlikely for these chips to arrive with iPhone 8.<br /><br />Apple has already deployed separate chips to efficiently handle wireless syncing with AirPods and motion sensing on Apple devices.<br /><br /><br />The possibility of an AI chip in development isn’t surprising considering Apple’s escalated interest in Artificial Intelligence over the years. In the past, Apple has acquired a couple of AI startups.<br /><br />The company also became a member of the research group Partnership on AI – initially set up by Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, and IBM – earlier this year. The research group focuses on the collaborative development of AI and its influence on the society.<br /><br />Although they aren’t flaunting, there could be some serious AI research going on under their R&D roofs. Well, at the current point in time, putting AI in devices has become more of a need than luxury when companies like Google are even developing AI solutions just to copy/paste stuff on Android phones. Crimson’s president Derek Choi confirmed to The Verge that the “website was altered by an unauthorized user” and wasn’t the act of the editorial team as a surprise welcome message for Zuckerberg.<br /><br />Now, Mark Zuckerberg has given the speech and got his honorary degree from Harvard University. Chit is the very basic unit of the chemical memory which can store one bit of information. The memory is still in development stage and might take years to land on your devices.<br /><br /><br />How do our devices store data? Traditional computer hardware stores information in the form of bits made up of binary numbers (0s and 1s) while the newer quantum computers have qubits for the same purpose.<br /><br /><br />Some people might’ve thought there should be another way to store data other than what we could leverage today. That’s why the researchers at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPC PAS) have created the initial version of a storage technology that can store information in chemical droplets.<br /><br />The very basic unit – made up of three droplets in contact with each other – of the memory is known as Chit. It is capable of storing 1 bit of data. Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction which follows an oscillatory course and serves as the driving force behind the existence of the chemical bit or Chit.<br /><br />The required reagents of the chemical reaction are reconstituted in the solution when one cycle is over. Around tens of thousands of oscillations happen before the reaction stops. A change in color of the solution, because of the reaction catalyst Ferroin, accompanies these oscillations.<br /><br />Another catalyst Ruthenium is used by the researchers to make the BZ reaction photosensitive. When a blue light is thrown, the oscillations stop and eventually the reaction, giving the researchers more control over the reaction.<br /><br />You can read the original story on Science Daily for more science stuff regarding the chemical memory.<br /><br />Dr. Konrad Gizynski, along with Prof. Jerzy Gorecki, demonstrated the new kind of memory using oscillating droplets. He says that their chemical bit has higher potential than the classical bit. “The rotational modes we used to record states 0 and 1 had the shortest oscillation periods of 18.7 and 19.5 seconds, respectively. So if the system oscillated any slower, we could talk about an additional third logic state,” he said.<br /><br />However, the research is still in its early stages. The reactions only account for storing information and physical methods are required for reading and writing data. Just when you thought that this was enough, Google stepped up its surveillance game and decided to watch you offline too. Due to a set of recent changes, Google is giving the advertisers new ways to measure the customers’ offline purchases and tie it with their online spending.<br /><br /><br />Google has said that it’s going to launch a new tool–Google Attribution– that’ll track how much you’re spending in a bricks-and-mortar store after you click on some ad on a website. This change will result in a new way to analyze ad performance by combining both purchases which were made after watching the ad.<br /><br />It should be noted that last year in December, a report published by ProPublica claimed that Facebook too tries to collect information about you from various offline sources as well.<br /><br />Google’s senior vice president for ads, Sridhar Ramaswamy, said that most people don’t just click on an ad and buy something. People perform additional research, they read articles, watch videos, and visit a store.<br /><br />Google announced that according to its metrics, more that 5 billion people visit stores globally. It’s worth noting that people who click on search ads are 25% more likely to buy something from a physical store.<br /><br />As expected, this location tracking coupled with credit card records has raised many eyebrows. The makers of Blockstack browser have called it the Netscape of the decentralized internet for running and making apps. A developer release of Blockstack browser is available, and a user version will arrive in six months.<br /><br />The decentralized nature of internet has been defeated by the large corporations and threats like net neutrality. This has inspired many organizations and open source movements to work and build the next technology that can power the open internet.<br /><br /><br />Blockchain, which powers Bitcoin, is one such technology that encourages a decentralized internet. Based on the same, now, a startup named Blockstack has created a browser that runs without existing internet infrastructure.<br /><br />Called the Blockstack browser, it was released at CoinDesk’s Consensus 2017 blockchain conference in New York. According to CoinDesk (which has ownership stake in Blockstock), it represents a piece of the progress made by the startup which has raised over $5 million to create a full developer stack for building apps.<br /><br />Blockstack co-founder Ryan Shea called it the beginning of a decentralized internet with the support for bitcoin, ethereum, and zcash.<br /><br />Blockstack is actually a browser add-on which loads on Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. The company is adding three updates to their existing clickbait fighting tool which was rolled out last year.<br /><br /><br />Now, Facebook will be able to differentiate better between a headline that’s a clickbait and the one that’s not.<br /><br />“First, we are now taking into account clickbait at the individual post level in addition to the domain and Page level, in order to more precisely reduce clickbait headlines,” reads the official blog post.<br /><br /><br />The post further explains the way the tool would analyze posts to verify “whether a headline withholds information or if it exaggerates information separately.” Also, they’d extend the capabilities of their anti-clickbait tool to other languages.<br /><br />Facebook identifies the phrases and words that are commonly present in clickbait headlines but not in others. The team claims that the newly developed quantum computer is about 24,000 times faster than its international competitors.<br /><br /><br />This quantum computer is built by the researchers working at the University of Science and Technology of China, which is located at Hefei in Anhui province. For those who don’t know, quantum computing machines are incredibly faster than the conventional computers. The quantum computers can also predict the complex behavior of subatomic particles.<br /><br />The researchers believe that quantum computing could excel the processing power of supercomputers. As a result, researchers are looking at various methods to store data as a possible storage medium.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Recently, researchers Yaniv Erlich and Dina Zielinski of the Data Science Institute at Columbia University and the New York Genome Center (NYGC) unveiled a new technique that allows DNA to store more data than ever before. In nature, DNA works by storing information about different forms of life and its characteristics using four base nucleotides: A, G, C and T. DNA has been studied for a while as a possible solution for storing human-generated data.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In essence, DNA works just like your hard drive, but instead of binary ones and zeros to store digital data, it uses a quaternary base to store information about a living organism’s genes. DNA is an ideal storage medium because it is ultra-compact and can last hundreds of thousands of years if kept in a cool, dry place, as demonstrated by the recent recovery of DNA from the bones of a 430,000-year-old human ancestor found in a cave in Spain.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“DNA won’t degrade over time like cassette tapes and CDs, and it won’t become obsolete – if it does, we have bigger problems,” said Yaniv Erlich from Columbia University.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The researchers showed how an algorithm designed for streaming video on a cellphone can unlock DNA’s nearly full storage potential by squeezing more information into its four base nucleotides. During their experiment, researchers said they successfully stored six files inside DNA molecules — a full computer operating system (KolibriOS), a 1895 French film – “Arrival of a train at La Ciotat”, a $50 Amazon gift card, a computer virus, a Pioneer plaque, and a 1948 study by information theorist Claude Shannon—into 72,000 DNA strands, each 200 bases long.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">After this, they retrieved the data using DNA sequencing technology and then a software to translate the code back into binary form so that it becomes readable again. The files were recovered with no errors.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“To retrieve the information, we sequenced the molecules. This is the basic process,” Erlich said.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Erlich explained how DNA is a better option than the current ones we already have. “DNA has several advantages to store information,” he said. “The first thing is that it’s very compact. In effect, it’s about one million times more compact than what you can get when you use a regular digital media.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The storage capacity is massive; it can reach a density of 215 Petabytes per gram of DNA and can last a very long period of time, which can be over a 100 years.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“We believe this is the highest-density data storage device ever created,” said Erlich.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The main barrier at the moment of bringing this into commercialisation is time and money, as it takes about two weeks to synthesize the DNA sequence, while it costs $7,000 to sequence 2MB of data into DNA, and then another $2,000 to read it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Despite this, the research team is very optimistic. When questioned how long it would take for this technology to be made available to everyone, Erlich replied that, “I would guess more than a decade. The WSJ reports that Google doesn’t love the deals it often has to make with third-party blockers like Adblock Plus, which require payment of fees in some cases to whitelist ads by companies like Google who are willing to pay for the privilege of working around their filters.</div><div><br /></div><div>Chrome’s widespread uptake by internet users means the browser has almost half of the market when it comes to navigating the web, so putting an ad blocker natively within Chrome and turning it on by default would basically stop cold the growth of third-party options: Users won’t actively seek out a way to block ads during their web-browsing sessions if the ads are already blocked to begin with.</div><div><br /></div><div>It’s a plan that’s sort of akin to operating for years with very thin margins or at a loss to block out the competition, almost the way Amazon approached e-commerce. Google wouldn’t be aiming to eliminate advertising altogether, but a side-benefit for consumers might be the institution of more user-friendly acceptability standards for ads — if you turn off your ad blocker for a second, you’ll find it’s gotten pretty bad out there.</div><div><br /></div><div>Of course, the plan offers plenty of potential pitfalls. As an advertiser itself, Google exercising stronger controls over ads will definitely draw criticism from industry peers, and possibly also from antitrust watchdog organizations.
