The research team at Google is preparing a 50 qubit chip which might set a benchmark in the field of quantum computing.<br /><br />Back in 2014, Google’s Quantum AI team first announced their intentions to build a new quantum computing chip. John Martinis and his team were invited under Google’s roof to help them accomplish this task. Now, almost two years later, the team is quite satisfied with their research.<br /><br />By the end of this year, it’s very likely that Google could push some quantum computing chip that’ll be far beyond the conventional computing chips.<br /><br />Their latest quantum chip – briefed by Martinis at the IEEE TechIgnite Conference in San Bruno – has its qubits arranged in two-by-three fashion. He says that the arrangement shows their tech also works when qubits are arranged side by side, as in the case of larger devices.<br /><br />The manufacturing process involves designing the qubits and the wiring that controls them on separate chips and then bump bonding them together. Now, it’s Jack Ma, the 52-year-old chairman of the Alibaba Group.<br /><br /><div><br /></div><div><br />At an entrepreneur conference in China, Jack Ma talked about robots and automation affecting our future. According to him, we must introduce newer education reforms and find ways to work better with robots.</div><div><br /></div><div><div>“In the next 30 years, the world will see much more pain than happiness,” he said (in Chinese) in reference to the technology disrupting our jobs. “Social conflicts in the next three decades will have an impact on all sorts of industries and walks of life.”</div><div><br /></div><div>Ma also recalled his earlier times when he warned about the impacts of e-commerce on traditional businesses but people didn’t pay attention.</div><div><br /></div><div>“Fifteen years ago I gave speeches 200 or 300 times reminding everyone the Internet will impact all industries, but people didn’t listen because I was a nobody.”</div><div><br /></div><div>Well, it’s good to hear that Mr. Jack Ma wanted to enlighten people about the impact of e-commerce and the Internet, but his company is now China’s biggest e-commerce portal and could do a one-on-one with Amazon.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><div>In his speech, Ma didn’t forget to include the most trending topic in the tech world, AI, and automation replacing humans. As a result, researchers are looking at various methods to store data as a possible storage medium.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Recently, researchers Yaniv Erlich and Dina Zielinski of the Data Science Institute at Columbia University and the New York Genome Center (NYGC) unveiled a new technique that allows DNA to store more data than ever before. In nature, DNA works by storing information about different forms of life and its characteristics using four base nucleotides: A, G, C and T. DNA has been studied for a while as a possible solution for storing human-generated data.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In essence, DNA works just like your hard drive, but instead of binary ones and zeros to store digital data, it uses a quaternary base to store information about a living organism’s genes. DNA is an ideal storage medium because it is ultra-compact and can last hundreds of thousands of years if kept in a cool, dry place, as demonstrated by the recent recovery of DNA from the bones of a 430,000-year-old human ancestor found in a cave in Spain.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“DNA won’t degrade over time like cassette tapes and CDs, and it won’t become obsolete – if it does, we have bigger problems,” said Yaniv Erlich from Columbia University.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The researchers showed how an algorithm designed for streaming video on a cellphone can unlock DNA’s nearly full storage potential by squeezing more information into its four base nucleotides. During their experiment, researchers said they successfully stored six files inside DNA molecules — a full computer operating system (KolibriOS), a 1895 French film – “Arrival of a train at La Ciotat”, a $50 Amazon gift card, a computer virus, a Pioneer plaque, and a 1948 study by information theorist Claude Shannon—into 72,000 DNA strands, each 200 bases long.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">After this, they retrieved the data using DNA sequencing technology and then a software to translate the code back into binary form so that it becomes readable again. The files were recovered with no errors.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“To retrieve the information, we sequenced the molecules. This is the basic process,” Erlich said.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Erlich explained how DNA is a better option than the current ones we already have. “DNA has several advantages to store information,” he said. “The first thing is that it’s very compact. In effect, it’s about one million times more compact than what you can get when you use a regular digital media.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The storage capacity is massive; it can reach a density of 215 Petabytes per gram of DNA and can last a very long period of time, which can be over a 100 years.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“We believe this is the highest-density data storage device ever created,” said Erlich.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The main barrier at the moment of bringing this into commercialisation is time and money, as it takes about two weeks to synthesize the DNA sequence, while it costs $7,000 to sequence 2MB of data into DNA, and then another $2,000 to read it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Despite this, the research team is very optimistic. When questioned how long it would take for this technology to be made available to everyone, Erlich replied that, “I would guess more than a decade. The WSJ reports that Google doesn’t love the deals it often has to make with third-party blockers like Adblock Plus, which require payment of fees in some cases to whitelist ads by companies like Google who are willing to pay for the privilege of working around their filters.</div><div><br /></div><div>Chrome’s widespread uptake by internet users means the browser has almost half of the market when it comes to navigating the web, so putting an ad blocker natively within Chrome and turning it on by default would basically stop cold the growth of third-party options: Users won’t actively seek out a way to block ads during their web-browsing sessions if the ads are already blocked to begin with.</div><div><br /></div><div>It’s a plan that’s sort of akin to operating for years with very thin margins or at a loss to block out the competition, almost the way Amazon approached e-commerce. Google wouldn’t be aiming to eliminate advertising altogether, but a side-benefit for consumers might be the institution of more user-friendly acceptability standards for ads — if you turn off your ad blocker for a second, you’ll find it’s gotten pretty bad out there.</div><div><br /></div><div>Of course, the plan offers plenty of potential pitfalls. As an advertiser itself, Google exercising stronger controls over ads will definitely draw criticism from industry peers, and possibly also from antitrust watchdog organizations. Predator is free Windows program which turns your USB drive into an automatic device that locks your computer when it’s removed. After you set up Predator, you can unlock your PC/laptop only by plugging in your USB pendrive. If somebody else attempts to access your computer without the USB flash drive, he/she will get a Hollywood-style  “Access Denied” message.<br /><br /><br />Here is how to lock and unlock your PC/laptop using Predator:<br /><br />Step 1: Download and install Predator.<br /><br />Step 2: Once Predator launches, plug in a USB pen drive. The point to note is that Predator uses any USB pen drive and it does not delete or alter any of the pen drive contents. When you insert the USB pendrive, Predator will ask you whether you want to create a password. Click OK to continue.<br /><br />Step 3: In the Preferences window, enter a secure password in the “New password” field. If you lose your USB pendrive, you can use this password to unlock your computer. Kindly note down this password as it is becomes very useful if  you lose your pendrive or it goes corrupt. Predator also allows you to use a password in addition to USB lock/unlock. If you want this facility, check the Always Required box and you’ll be asked to enter the password each time you use your thumbdrive to unlock your PC.<br /><br />Finally, in the section under Flash Drives, ensure that the correct USB flash drive is selected. When you’re done, click “Create key” and then OK.<br /><br />Step 4: Predator will exit. Click the Predator icon in the taskbar to restart the program. A few seconds later, the icon will turn green, alerting you that Predator is running. Once done, Predator will check every 30 seconds to see that your USB pendrive is plugged in. If it isn’t, your computer will dim and lock down.<br /><br />You can pause Predator at any time select “Pause monitoring” from the taskbar menu. You can also check if someone accessed your PC/laptop while the Predator was switched on using USB drive from the Predator activity log.<br /><br />The only issue with using Predator on your computer is that it locks down one USB port exclusively for the lock/unlock purpose. The team was able to crack the phone’s four-digit PINs with a surprising 70% accuracy on the first try. The accuracy increased to 100% by the fifth try.<br /><br />The research states that the case of websites being accessed via mobile web browsers is the most troublesome as a malicious site can expose the device to such sensor-based monitoring. By getting the access to such data, a hacker can determine if the target is walking, traveling in a car, or sitting.<br /><br /><br />Talking to TechCrunch, paper’s lead researcher Dr. Maryam Mehrnezhad said that all the mobile platforms are aware of this issue and they are cooperating to fix this problem.<br /><br />“We reported it to them, and ever since we’ve been in touch with them, we’ve been trying to fix this problem together. It’s still ongoing research on both sides. But we’re in contact with these communities to figure out the best solution,” she said.<br /><br />The research team has also contacted major web players like W3C and Mozilla to address the issue.
